Connecting a computer to a network printer is a task that a person trying to establish the connection have a little knowledge or they could waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to connect. The author speaks with experience and in the future on other subjects dealing with installing equipment on the computer will become easier to figure out how to do various jobs. Any of the computer companies have literature that comes with some of the computers and of course you can find a ton of information on how to setup any sort of network that you need. Many of the newer printers come ready to hook up directly to networks. It has become very easy over the years. The newer printers come equipped with a printer network interface card and they can either be wired or wirelesses depending on what your needs are for your network. The way you can tell if the printer is ready for a wired network is the RJ-45 socket will be on the printer's backside. If this is the type of printer that you are using then it is quite simple to establish the connection for local computers or non network computers. If your printer is not capable of just hooking RJ-45 cable to the printer and then to the network then another way to establish a network printer is to add an external Jetdirect box with either a wireless or wired connection. Once you have a printer hooked to your network then anyone can use the printer. The computer does however need to establish a connection to the network somehow and then download the printer driver in order for the two pieces of equipment to be able to work together.
The computer can also connect wirelessly to any wireless network and use the printer on the network as long as the user has the proper permission such as passwords or what ever has been setup by the administrator of the network.
There are several convenience aspects for why a network printer is beneficial not only to a huge company but for the small home network. The first that comes to mind is costs. Even though most of the up keep costs i.e. ink, paper the initial cost of the printer is what can be saved with a network printer. A company with a networked printer could also have control over what can be printed and who can or can not have access to it at a certain time. By using a central printer on the network the company could also have it set up to keep a running count of a clients portfolio and have a way of using that information when recovering costs that your company has incurred as a cost of business.
